Task
Design a furniture piece for yourself in 3D modeling at a scale of 1:10. The goal is to explore proportions, geometric shapes, and their three-dimensionality. Create an advertisement for your furniture piece for the sharing phase. The aim is to analyze the structure of advertisements and practice creating them. This is an individual task, where assistance from others can be used for brainstorming and modeling. Initially, approximately 6 weeks are allocated for the project, spending 2-4 hours per week.
Background Work
2h: Familiarize yourself with the 3D modeling software. Learn and experiment with its capabilities and limitations. Gain an understanding of what can be achieved through modeling.
2h: Get acquainted with Finnish furniture designers and their designs. Consider why designers have made different choices. Explore factors affecting the usability of furniture and which aspects are visual solutions. Take measurements of your body to design furniture suitable for yourself. Experiment with new ideas in the modeling software.
Brainstorming
2h: Share experiences of good furniture pieces and discuss what makes them good. Search online for images of different furniture pieces for inspiration. Sketch three ideas for furniture on paper and choose one as the basis for 3D modeling.
Planning
2h: Use TinkerCAD to model the chosen furniture piece based on the sketches, considering proportions.
Implementation
2h: Gather feedback from classmates on your furniture piece and finalize it. Begin 3D printing.
Sharing
2h: Analyze advertisements and design your own. Capture images of your 3D-printed furniture pieces.
2h: Compile advertisements and create a class brochure. Display the brochure and printed furniture pieces in an exhibition for other students to see.
Evaluation
Evaluation will be conducted through a Google Form survey. The survey will assess visual appeal, usability, learning during the project, and the effectiveness of the advertisement. The same criteria will also be assessed through peer evaluation.
